Urban crossovers are jumping out left right and center this year. Nissan has created the perfect crossover to suit families in urban regions. The Nissan Qashqai, pronounced cash-kai, holds the space and utility convenience of a full-sized SUV, while bundled in a smaller city-sized package. Although the Qashqai is a favourite, with great fuel economy and an abundance of options and features, it isn’t the only option. Toyota is prepared to combat Nissan this year with their 2018 Toyota CH-R crossover. The CH-R hosts a similar stance as the Qashqai, and does well to bring all the same levels of convenience and versatility to the table as Nissan does. If you’re looking to purchase a crossover this year, both of these vehicles should be on your radar. Let’s get into the specifics.
It’s not all black and silver anymore.
Nissan has taken care to ensure that drivers can have as much variety in the colour of their vehicle as they want. The Qashqai is available in 10 radiant colours ranging from the classic shades to the high-powered paint. While Toyota CH-R does have the basic options, there isn’t as much colour variety when it comes to the vehicle.
Performance promises that are being kept.
Both the Qashqai and the CH-R crossovers seem to be pretty powerful for their size. The Nissan Qashqai puts you in total control with a standard 6-speed manual transmission for an engaging ride with performance dictated by you. If you’re not a fan of manual driving, the available next-generation XTRONIC Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) gives you freedom with seamless shifting, strong acceleration, and increased fuel economy. Although the Nissan Qashqai is a favourite, the CH-R is hosts some power as well. Sport Mode allows the driver to engage a simulated 7-speed sequential Shiftmatic. This maintains high engine speed while enhancing acceleration.
The CH-R sounds great, but we agree that you can’t go wrong with the Qashqai. Nissan’s Sport Steering sharpens steering response to rev up your senses. Not only does the vehicle host a powerful sense, it’s got a composed side as well. If you’re low on gas and late for work, Eco Mode adjusts engine and transmission response to maximize fuel efficiency, and even adjusts the air conditioning for reduced energy use.
This time, looks are everything.
Qashqai was designed to help navigate you through anything. With it’s perfectly designed height and clean character lines and you’ll look good wherever you’re headed. The trunk is designed so you can re-configure with ease, and be on your way.
The CH-R presents an aggressive look. While some might like that, the rough and jagged edges create a compressed visual appearance. In return, the vehicle looks smaller and less spacious.
Qashqai is stacked with available technology and safety equipment that connects you to your to everything inside your vehicle while keeping a lookout on the outside of your vehicle. You stay connected with the hands-free Bluetooth audio system, navigate your way with NissanConnect and the touch-screen interface and focus on your distance with Nissan’s Intelligent Cruise Control system.
The CR-H reflects similar connectivity as the base model comes equipped with an Audio Display system. The Qashqai features Nissan Safety Shield Technologies, and the CH-R showcases Toyota’s Safety Sense suite. While they both have their perks, the Nissan Qashqai offers more versatility and features when it comes to safety features.
